Mouse Polling Rate Explained: 125Hz vs 1000Hz, How to Measure and Change It

What polling rate is: the hidden floor on latency

Polling rate is how often your mouse reports its position and button state to the PC: at 125Hz that's every 8 ms, at 1000Hz every 1 ms. This interval sets a floor on input lag — no matter how fast you click, the PC doesn't know until the next report, so a 125Hz mouse starts every action with roughly 4 ms of average built-in delay.

Office and budget wireless mice mostly run at 125Hz; gaming mice standardize on 500–1000Hz, with 4000–8000Hz models now on the market. But what your mouse actually runs at is a matter of measurement, not the spec sheet — settings, hubs, and wireless conditions frequently drag real-world operation below the rating.

Measuring it: thirty seconds in the browser

Move your cursor in fast circles inside the test area of our mouse test and watch the max polling rate card. Under the hood we aggregate movement-event timestamps over a one-second window — and because browsers coalesce pointer events per frame, we use the getCoalescedEvents API to recover the true hardware report interval rather than your monitor's frame rate.

Slow movement generates fewer events and reads low, so move fast and continuously for an accurate figure. Repeat a few times and take the highest reading as your mouse's effective rate. Converging near a clean value — 125, 500, 1000 — is the expected, healthy result.

Changing it: where the setting lives

Gaming mice expose polling rate in their vendor software (Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, SteelSeries GG, and so on); some let you switch it in hardware with a bottom switch or DPI-button combo. Make a habit of re-measuring with our test after changing it — that's how you catch a setting that silently didn't apply.

If the spec says 1000Hz but you measure 125Hz, the usual culprits are: vendor software not installed (mouse running its default profile), a wireless mouse in power-saving mode, a USB hub in the path, or a poorly placed receiver. Moving the dongle to a front port or an extension cradle near the mouse fixes a large share of wireless cases.

How much do you actually need?

125Hz to 1000Hz is a real, perceptible upgrade — cursor motion is visibly smoother on high-refresh monitors and micro-adjustments in aim feel more consistent. If you game at all, set 1000Hz; virtually every gaming mouse supports it, so it costs nothing.

1000Hz to 8000Hz is a different conversation. Latency drops from 1 ms to 0.125 ms on paper, which is marginal against human reaction time (150–250 ms), and it costs real CPU usage plus occasional game-compatibility quirks. Unless you're a high-level competitive FPS player on a 240Hz+ monitor, 1000Hz is the rational resting point — 8000Hz is bought for want, not need, and that's fine as long as you know it.
