Echo: it's usually your speakers, not your mic
When people say your voice echoes, instinct blames the microphone — but the standard echo scenario is this: the other person's voice plays from your speakers, your mic picks it back up, and it returns to them delayed. The person using open speakers is usually the one causing the echo everyone else hears.
The test is trivial: put on earphones or a headset, and if the echo the other side hears disappears, feedback pickup was the cause. If you must use speakers, verify the app's echo cancellation is on (it usually is by default), lower the speaker volume, and increase the distance between speakers and mic — physics is the reliable fix.
Hiss: gain staging is half the battle
The main source of constant background hiss is excessive input gain. Amplifying a weak signal amplifies the noise floor with it. Tune by watching the level meter in our mic test: speaking normally, the meter should reach the upper-middle without touching the end (0 dB). If your mic boost is set to +20 dB or more, it's almost certainly too much.
The professional alternative to cranking gain is getting closer to the mic. Halving the mouth-to-mic distance raises your signal substantially, letting you cut gain by the same amount — and the signal-to-noise ratio improves dramatically. This distance advantage is exactly why headset boom mics punch above their price in clarity.
Software noise suppression: use it knowingly
Modern call apps — Discord, Zoom, Teams — ship AI noise suppression that erases keyboard clatter and air conditioning impressively well. The trade-off: the harder it works, the more it smears your voice into robot territory. If your environment isn't loud, a medium setting sounds far more natural than maximum.
These features also mask real microphone problems. When you're diagnosing the mic itself, use a tool that shows the unprocessed signal — like our test. Noise audible here means a hardware or gain problem; clean here but bad in the app means the app's processing or settings are to blame. That split saves a lot of guessing.
Placement and environment: the free final step
Microphones care more about distance than direction. A mic sitting on the desk beside your keyboard picks up keystrokes nearly as loudly as your voice — far from the keyboard, close to the mouth is placement rule number one. Isolating the mic from the desk with a stand or arm also kills the low-frequency thumps of typing traveling through wood.
Plosives — those popping breath bursts — improve just by angling the mic slightly off-axis from your mouth instead of dead-center.
